Laid Back Moab Wedding at Under Canvas

When I say that Fall 2018 was busy, I really mean it. That's why I am just now getting around to posting about one of our Moab weddings during that time! It was at the beginning of the year that Gabby asked me (Jessica) to hop on her team and help with some events and office things. I agreed and then was quickly introduced to Alyse, a future 'Cause We Can Events bride!

Alyse & Jake took their very first trip, as a couple, to Moab years before their engagement. With that idea in mind, they decided to host their "End of Summer Camp" themed wedding at Under Canvas Moab.

CREATING THE INVITE & SETTING THE MOOD

With most guests coming from Alaska, it was important to the couple that their guests knew what it would take to get to Moab and how to make the most out of their trip. Alyse worked with a friend to design an invitation they would go on to create themselves! In the blink of an eye a website, save the date and super cool invitations were born. If you need assistance creating your invite design, we recommend Basic Invite. PRO TIP: We always recommend you create a website for a destination wedding. It’s the easiest way to get information to all of your guests at once! TIP FROM THE BRIDE: Price out invitation ideas with how much postage will cost!

WELCOME DINNER

As guests arrived on Friday afternoon, they were greeted by the Under Canvas team and checked into their luxury tents. PRO TIP: provide gift bags when your guests arrive to make them feel extra special! That evening Alyse & Jake hosted a welcome dinner equipped with "Tent Talks", their version of Ted Talks. They invited a couple key family members and friends to stand by the fire and share a story with all of the guests. This by far was one of the most memorable moments of any 2018 wedding we did! It's a pretty special and rare moment when you can make a gathering of 100 guests feel intimate. After "Tent Talks", everyone hit the outdoor firepit for s’mores and live music all provided by Under Canvas. It was the perfect start to summer camp.

GETTING READY

The next day, our team worked closely with a core group of friends to switch up the decor and setup the platform for the reception. All Good Super Fresh had their cute trailer ready to go so they could serve breakfast to the guests! During our setup, Alyse got ready with friends at the Desert Day Spa while Jake hung out with his bike and drone close by.

PARTY TIME
Catering in Moab can be tricky if you have a specific budget and idea in mind, not to mention power but we will save that for another blog post. We talked to a local restaurant, Miguel's Baja Grill, as we were looking for a fajita station to serve to the guests! For their first time catering a wedding, they really knocked it out of the park for us. After dinner, the night continued with a lot of dancing and good times for all.

Alyse & Jake’s wedding was a special one for so many reasons and we could not have done it without the amazing vendor team we had in place. Not to mention, the great friends & family that came along for the adventure.

Glamping Wedding at Moab Under Canvas

You probably hear us talking about Under Canvas weddings all the time on Instagram BUT we've never really blogged about them. Well today is the day! We're giving you a glimpse inside what it's like to have a wedding at Under Canvas Moab. Ready to get blown away?

Let's start by saying that Becca and Sander spent a year and a half planning this wedding all while Becca was attending NYU for Interior Design. This venue is spectacular in itself but in order to produce a 4-day wedding for 160 guests, it takes an experience wedding planning team (oh hi!) and a lot of coffee!

After guests checked into their gorgeous accommodations, we opened up the dining area and had long wooden tables decorated with succulents in hand painted pots. The cute mini airstream trailer bar was open for business and a local folk/bluegrass band, Slim Pickin's band was playing on the stage.

Every single night we experienced an incredible sunset. The soon-to-be newlyweds took full advantage and headed out for romantic and fun photos each night. Guests were kept busy with lot's of delicious food, drinks, music and games!

And after two full days of celebrating Becca and Sander in the desert came the actually wedding day. We decided to have this day on a Sunday since the following Monday was a holiday. Might as well take full advantage of having all your guests in one place for a long weekend!

The guys seemed to have a really great time getting ready in their tents. They even had a barrel of whiskey!

The ceremony took place on giant flat rock formations (sorry I don't have a scientific name for these!) with the most spectacular view of the Moab desert. We were right next to Arches National Park, yet still far away enough from tourists to enjoy the ceremony with friends and family only.

Top 4 Venues for Adventurous Weddings

If you've browsed through our website, you may have noticed that Adventurous Weddings are kind of our jam. I didn't set out to specialize in this type of wedding but holy smokes do I love it! A whole weekend of music, food and nature? Sign me up! So, if you're just starting your search for an Adventurous Style Wedding venue, I have a few places in mind that you might like to check out.

1.Moab Under Canvas, Utah

best desert wedding venue moab under canvas utah

A gateway to two stunning National Parks, Moab Under Canvas offers the perfect mix of wilderness and comfort. Your guests can venture to Canyonlands National Park for the euphoric, top-of-the-world sensation and can come back to their cushy teepee for the ultimate glamping experience.

Pros:

  • You can have a multiple-day wedding/event
  • Bring in your own vendors
  • Accommodates 120+ guests on-site
  • Tons of daytime activities near by
  • Breathtaking views and natural beauty
  • No curfew
  • Cleaning staff on-site for tents/teepees

Challenges:

  • Very limited power and lighting (requires generator rental)
  • Limited cell service (I use radios for this venue)
  • Must bring in all rentals (tables, chairs, lighting, bar, etc.)
  • Set Up is logistically hard - PLEASE hire a Wedding Planner!
  • It's a little far from airports and about a 13 hour drive from Los Angeles

2. RimRock Ranch, Joshua Tree, CA

RimRock Ranch is where I got married in September 2017! The reason I chose this venue is because we can have it for 3 days, it's next to Joshua Tree National Park, our pups can attend and it has a few airports nearby. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible and I barely need any decor items because of the natural beauty and cool eclectic decor in this space.

Pros:

  • Can have multiple-day events
  • Rad owners - Gwen and Eric
  • Accommodations for 22 people
  • Tons of AirBnBs nearby
  • BYOV (bring your own vendors)
  • Dog-friendly
  • Near Pappy & Harriet's music venue

Challenges:

  • Caterer must be self-sufficient (food trucks are ideal)
  • Can get very hot - rent some parasols!
  • Requires a little more planning logistically
  • Rentals required

3. Kiva Koffeehouse, Utah

Nestled in beautiful Escalante, Utah you'll find this friendly neighborhood Coffee Shop called Kiva Koffeehouse. Known for their homemade soups, fresh bread and hot coffee , they also offer their space for small, intimate weddings.

Intimate wedding set up inside the Kiva Koffeehouse in Escalante Utah.

Pros:

  • Very flexible and easy to work with - family-run
  • Access to their tables and chairs (cafe style)
  • On-site catering provided
  • Can bring in your own teepee for decor

Challenges:

  • Only two cottages available on-site
  • Rental can only start after 6pm (when the cafe closes)

No pets allowed

4. Black Rock Desert, Nevada

This location is way out there and not for the faint of heart. It will require a lot of imagination, money and patience but it will be SO worth it. We had the honor of planning a wedding on The Playa where the famous Burning Man festival happens every year and it was the wildest wedding ride we've ever been on!

Burning Man wedding on the Playa in Black Rock Desert

Pros:

  • Blank canvas
  • No curfew
  • Epic scenery
  • Extremely unique
  • BYO vendors

Challenges:

  • Requires permitting
  • Need to bring everything in (power, water, restrooms, lighting...)
  • Vendors come from further away which means a higher delivery fee
  • Weather can be unpredictable
