Cute & Colorful Llama First Birthday Party

While our team here at 'Cause We Can Events mostly does weddings, we love sprinkling in some fun creative events like one year old birthday parties! If you haven't yet been to a llama themed birthday party, today is your lucky day!

“This blog post contains affiliate links. If you click on one of them, and make a purchase, I’ll receive a commission at no additional cost to you."

The party venue

This particular party took place at a home in Los Angeles that we rented off of PeerSpace. Cool, right? I don't often have the opportunity to look for venues on there but it was the perfect space for a birthday party.

Our clients 'must-haves' for the birthday party venue were simple but still required a little research. On their list was:

  • Great outdoor backyard
  • Some outdoor seating
  • Room for a taco cart
  • Access to restrooms indoor
  • Access to a kitchen for preparations

This house checked off all of our boxes and as a bonus, it had an amazing outdoor bar! This bar officially made it to my own Pinterest 'dream house' board. All we had to add was this colorful shimmery paper garland to add a little pop of color.

The party rentals

Now, a one year old llama birthday party should have all the cutest details and this one definitely did! We rented several pieces of bohemian furniture from Provenance Rentals in Los Angeles. From this cute Agua Fresca table to the fun peacock chair, it was really fun for us as event planners to pick out pieces for this party.

Want to recreate the look? We've gathered our favorite items for you to shop. Check our out "Bohemian Birthday Party" shopping list!

Birthday Party Games

No party is complete without a few fun games, right? Even though the birthday girl was only turning one, a lot of the guests were kids aged 5-10. We had a giant connect four game, giant Jenga, a balloon show and a couple ball games around the lawn.

For the parents, we had a fully stocked bar and bartender ready to make them an afternoon cocktail to go with their taco feast. I think it's safe to say that all guests were well taken care of.

Birthday party food ideas

Of course, no party is completely without delicious food, drinks and desserts! The birthday girl's family brought homemade spring rolls and we had an amazing Taco Cart vendor there. Guests got to eat as much as they wanted!

The desserts were almost like an art installation! We decided to use a great white antique dresser from Provenance Rentals to stage all of the desserts on. The key to creating a great dessert display is to have multiple levels of treats. Place them on cake stands, inside drawers and on lower platters.

How cute are the llama and cactus cookies that Nicole Bakes Cakes made! They were a huge hit and also a great gift for guests to take home after the party.

I think we can all agree that the star of the show is this adorable llama birthday cake!! Nicole Bakes Cakes knocked it out of the park as always and had everyone snapping photos of this cute llama smash cake.

First birthday party favors

The birthday girl received some incredible gifts from friends and family. We also wanted to thank guests for coming to the party by giving them a little party favor as well.

The kids who attended each got a llama party bag filled with goodies like bubbles, slime and treats. Of course, everyone was encouraged to take the cactus and llama cookies home as well!

Vendor team

Shoutout to the amazing vendors who helped bring this llama birthday party vision to life!

Easy Halloween Dining Room Decorations

I may have started to decorate for Halloween in August this year but if you're just getting to it now, I have a fun idea for you! These Halloween decorations can be modified however you want with whatever you have in your home.

If you were following our blog recently, you saw that we hosted a Halloween Tablescape contest that featured over 20 amazing designs from some of our Instagram friends.

Well on today's blog, I wanted to zoom in on our design so you can take a look at all the fun details. I called this design my Werewolf Themed Tablescape because of that faux fur runner in the middle!

Special thank you to Darcy Ferris for coming over and getting photos of my tablescape! She's a talented photographer here in Nashville. She does everything from weddings to family sessions and now interior design photography haha.

List of Supplies

I'm not going to lie I started decorating in August this year woops. I happened to already own a few of the items you see in the images. I want to give you a proper list of what I bought so you can recreate this at home. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Faux-fur fabric. I purchased mine at Joann Fabrics
  • 6 Charger Plates. I got mine at Kirkland's on sale for $3 each.
  • Dinner plates & salad plates. I used the ones I had at home. You'll notice that I snuck some white ones in there because I didn't have enough black ones!
  • Napkins. I bought these at Kirkland's. Set of 4 for $16.
  • Bell Jars. I ordered these on Amazon because I knew I could reuse them for something else later! I ordered the 9.8" and the 5.9".
  • Black candle holders. I love these from Amazon.
  • Black candle sticks. I had these already but I know you can get some on Amazon as well.
  • Skull glasses. I found these at my local Dollar General but the quality isn't great. I found these way cooler ones on Amazon!
  • Cobwebs for the chandelier were from Amazon. I used them on my outdoor bushes too. You don't need a lot!
  • Bats for the wall. Another great Amazon find. They come with little double sided sticky things and I plan to reuse them next year too.
  • Science beakers. I used these to put my flowers in and I thought it looked really fun! Here are the ones I ordered.

Hotel Figueroa: A modern boutique hotel and wedding venue

Part of our job (and trust me it's a fun part) is that we get to visit wedding and event venues all over Los Angeles and beyond to see if they might be a good fit for our clients. Sometimes they are venues that we know about but have never been in person and sometimes it's an old venue that got a new facelift. This time, Jessica, Kari and I headed downtown Los Angeles to check out the trendy and newly restored, Hotel Figueroa.

Boutique Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles, Hotel Figueroa is the perfect wedding venue for the modern bride or corporate event space for trendy companies

The Rooms

First we got a tour of the rooms and suites. We love checking these out because we can see where our couples will be getting ready and how the lighting and space will look for our photographers. Good news, every single room and suite looked photo-ready!

The event spaces

Next, we headed into the main area of the hotel to check out their cool event spaces. With over 10,000 sq. feet of event space Hotel Figueroa can offer an intimate and outdoor gathering on the Terrazza (for up to 140 guests) or something more elaborate in the Gran Sala complete with Spanish Colonial Architecture right down to the limestone fireplace.

Even beyond events themselves Hotel Figueroa is welcoming to all its guests. With many lounges scattered across the property it’s a perfect place to relax and mingle with old friends and new. P.S their cocktails are INCREDIBLE.

The food + drinks

As beautiful as this place is the facility is only part of the story. On our tour we got treated to lunch and ordered delicious dishes from their in-house restaurant, Breva. We sat outside in their tropical-modern-moroccan patio overlooking the pool. This space is available to rent as well!

After lunch, we ended the tour in their separate beach bungalow! This is typically open as a restaurant and bar but clients can do a full buyout and even use this space as the wedding after-party. I think this was my favorite space, look how colorful the design is.

Ojai Bachelorette Weekend Getaway

When we were asked to join Sarah Ellefson on a fun bachelorette shoot in Ojai, we said HECK YES! It's fun to step outside of our wedding planning bubble and plan something more intimate and unique. Obviously there was going to be wine involved too so you really can't say no to that! The purpose of this shoot was to showcase Ojai and what it has to offer various groups of people. In particular, we felt it would be perfect for a bachelorette weekend getaway.

You're about to embark on a wild ride, your wedding day! It's so important to take time before the big day to just relax and enjoy your best friends. Heather with Rise, a salon located in the heart of Ojai, is the perfect first stop on your weekend getaway. Grab a bottle of Champagne and your closest gal pals to enjoy a blowout. This space would also be a perfect getting ready location for an Ojai wedding!

Obviously you'll want to stay the night (or two) in Ojai for this weekend getaway. We would highly recommend you check out Caravan Outpost for the perfect accommodations. With a handful of Airstreams on property that are perfectly decorated, it would be the ultimate place to hang out. There are bicycles on property as well as a fire pit to hang out around and not to mention a perfectly curated store. You may remember our post about this place as a wedding venue too. You'll want to check that out!

If you're anything  like me, you'll probably pack for this trip and think "I have nothing to wear!" That's where Novella Fox comes into play this weekend! The owner, Madi, has crafted a fun store that includes new & vintage pieces. Her staff, who are all so friendly, can help you pick out the perfect bachelorette outfit. I would also recommend you pick up some honeymoon outfits too.

A girl's weekend trip would not be complete without a charcuterie board and some wine! We recommend you head over to Tipple & Ramble to enjoy their beautiful outdoor patio for the day. With so many great wine choices, you'll want to stay a bit before heading back to your super cool Airstream for the night.

Easy Table Design For Bachelorette Weekend

It's easy for our team to get lost in emails and be on the computer most of the week when we are not onsite at events. We came up with an idea to launch a Content Creation day every first Tuesday of the month. This allows for us to step outside of our office bubble and into a creative space where we get to work with some of our favorite vendors. It's also a great time to meet vendors we haven't had the chance to work with!

I have yet to get married but know that if and when I do, I most likely won't set out to plan a wild bachelorette. Instead I am interested in my best girl friends, a fun table design & a boozy brunch! This tablescape was designed for the laidback bride-to-be with a fun side. It's perfect idea for asking your best girlfriends to be a part of your special day or as I mentioned, a great alternative to a bachelorette party!

DIY boho table runner idea with copper and pink details

Sometime between our busiest wedding season and the holidays, I purchased an embroidery/sewing machine. Most ask, "Oh! You sew?" and I'll admit that's a very logical question. I am here to tell you no, no I do not sew but that doesn't mean I won't be the next Martha Stewart in event embroidery (is that a thing? yeah sure).  With a little determination and a few YouTube videos later I am now a professional and knew I wanted to use my new machine (and skill set) in our upcoming content creation shoot. "No Ugly Crying" is the funniest phrase for a weekend with your girls. Planning a wedding is emotional and the goal is to definitely not ugly cry and more so happy cry!

The idea behind this table is anyone can create it on a small scale. We used items from La Pinata Rentals + Collective Rentals to come up with this table design. What you need:

  • A CLEAN TABLE: We went with white so it would balance out all the colors being used
  • TABLE RUNNER: I used a roll of colorful yarn (like this one) to create an easy DIY runner that felt very unique and fun.
  • DINNERWARE: At the last minute, we decided to add a Ratan charger that added a fun neutral, boho vibe. Then we chose to work with a palette of pale pink and an off-white with copper accents.
  • NAPKIN: This is where you should have a lot of fun! Get napkins embroidered with your friends names or a funny saying! Perhaps even an inside joke. They can then use this on the wedding day when they are in fact ugly crying.
  • FLORALS: Auroral Floral used simple, clean flowers to make the arrangement with the idea of "DIY." But hey, if you don't want to make your own arrangement you can definitely hire our girl!

A Moody + Elegant St Patrick’s Day Dinner Party

St Patrick's Day is just around the corner which beer and silly hats? Not anymore! Now that we're all mature grown adults (we are, right?), we thought it was time to up our St Patrick's Day. Let's make it less of a drunken mess and more of a fun time to get together with friends for a dinner party!

St Patrick's Day dinner party with tall black candles and dark green napkins. Frames with greenery coming out adds a fun nature element to the design

Every good party starts with a beautiful invitation. We thought it would be fun to send along an Irish blessing with the invite as this day is also known as the Feast of St Patrick. How perfect!

Irish blessing written in gold on green paper. St Patrick's Day party invitation

We love the idea of incorporating nature whenever we can so creating a unique backdrop for this table was top of mind. The project was quite simple. We got a few frames, took out the glass and hung them on the wall with Command Strips to avoid any paint damage. Our talented florist played around with a few ferns and hanging plants to add that bit of nature to our art piece.

For the actual table top design, we skipped the cheesy leprechaun decor and chose to take this St Paddy's Day party idea to the next level. We wanted to recreate a sort of pub feel with darker place settings and touches of gold details. I can imagine the meal being served family style and all those candles being lit. Cozy, elegant and intimate. Wanna know a secret? See those black chargers under the plates? Well, it turns out those are serving trays. I saw them at La Pinata Rentals and thought they would be perfect for this!

Black charger, dark green plate and brown top plate for a st paddy's day party!

Did you notice the little charm on the napkins? We made those. We foraged for some clovers (while they weren't 4-leaf clovers, I still consider them lucky) and went to Michaels to get a gold backing in the jewelry section. We gently placed the clover on top of the gold backing and covered it with a clear "bubble sticker" also sold at Michaels. Tada!

It wouldn't be a St Patrick's Day party without a bar! We put together a simple but fun bar cart for this dinner party. Guests can help themselves to a Shamrockarita or Guinness Float.

October 25, 2018 - Comments Off on This Year’s Best Thanksgiving Table Decor

This Year’s Best Thanksgiving Table Decor

I hate to break it to you, Christmas, but Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. There's something really cozy and relaxing about it. Maybe it's the fact that the first snow usually happens around that time? Maybe it's because wedding season is over and I have time to read a bunch of books? Or maybe it's the simple fact that I am sharing a delicious meal with 30+ of my closest family members.

This year my cousin and I are in charge of creating some little escort cards and we're thinking of going the tiny pumpkin route. Can't go wrong with that, right?

Moody Thanksgiving or Holiday Table Decor at Smoky Hollow Studios

Edgy Florals

Last year a few of my favorite vendors and I got together at Smoky Hollow Studios to create what I think is the the best Thanksgiving table decor ever! I mean, to me this tablescape is both cozy and edgy at the same time. Take a peek.

We wanted the table decor to have a ton of character and edginess to it. Our amazing florist Annie from Best Day Ever Floral Design came up with the idea to add a few wispy flowers in cool concrete vases from Concrete Geometric.

Simple place settings

We chose to keep the place setting clean and simple with white and grey plates, silver utensils and add texture with a velvet napkin. See that little name tag on the napkin? These tiny little metal plates were hand stamped by the super talented calligrapher and invitations designer Lisa from Fiber and Dye. Check out this cool menu she created on the venue's chalkboard wall!

Holiday Cocktails

Ok let's talk about cocktails shall we? We had the lovely Sarah from Cali Craft Cocktails come by and provide us with the most delicious and festive drinks. Can we talk about how yummy the coffee-infused drink looks? It fit in so perfectly with our winter tablescape.

Fall cocktail for dinner party or holiday meal.

Unique Desserts

Let's be real. No dinner party is complete without dessert! For this Thanksgiving dinner, we stayed away from the traditional pumpkin pie (although it's one of my all time favorite desserts) and opted for a fun whoopie pie! We also paired it with a moscow mule because...why not! Check out the whoopie pie recipe below along with a bonus dessert recipe.

Easy Whoopie Pie Recipe (makes 12 pies):

For the cookie pies:

  • Purchase 24 pre-baked cookies in a flavor of your choice from your local bakery (yes, it's that easy). We chose chocolate chip cookies! Select large cookies for the classic whoopie pie look.

Making the cookies:

  • If you prefer to make your own cookies, we recommend combining enough dough for 2 cookies to act as each 'pie', pressing down on a baking sheet, and baking accordingly.
  • Set aside while you prepare the filling.

 Filling ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup softened butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 cup marshmallow creme
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Making the filling:

  • In a large bowl, blend together all of the ingredients until smooth.

Whoopie Pie Assembly:

  • Spread marshmallow filling on one cookie 'pie' while using another cookie 'pie' to press down.
  • Enjoy immediately or store in a covered container to enjoy later.

Festive Ginger Cookies (tip: use these cookies as the 'pies' for your whoopie pies for a unique twist!):

  • 2 1/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons  ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon  baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon  ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted  softened butter
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

Making the cookies:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • Mix dry ingredients together in a large bowl
  • Use a stand mixer to cream together the butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add in the egg, water and molasses then add in the dry ingredients.
  • Scoop and combine two tablespoons of cookie dough and roll them into the 2 tablespoons of sugar. Place on a baking sheet and flatten slightly with the bottom of a measuring cup.
  • Bake for 8-11 minutes.
  • Remove from oven and let cool.

Hope this gave you a few ideas for your own Thanksgiving table decor or even maybe your holiday dinner party. Cheers to a great holiday season!

The Rising Tide Society Leaders Retreat in New Orleans

Last week, myself and over 100 other amazing entrepreneurs and small business owners gathered at the Portchartrain Hotel in New Orleans for the annual Rising Tide Society Leaders Retreat. The retreat was both inspirational and motivating. It was an incredible feeling to be in a room with hundreds of go-getters and talented people. During the retreat down-time, fellow leaders Lauren, Lara and I tried to see as much as New Orleans as we could in just a few hours.

Best place for beignets

You can't visit NOLA without eating a million beignets and tasting the infamous chicory coffee at Cafe du Monde. Since both Lauren and Lara are photographers, I couldn't resist posing for a few photos in front of some of the traditional New Orleans houses. Some of these houses were getting ready for Mardi Gras which starts this week!

Although we only spent about 48 hours in beautiful New Orleans, we got to see some of the key parts of this city. I'm really looking forward to going back checking out the local wedding venues like, Race & Religious which I have been DYING to visit! What else should we see on our next visit there?

3 tips to making sure you crush your goals in 2018!

goal setting and crushing goals this year

My introduction to Goal Setting and Goal Crushing

I'm not entirely sure why, but goal setting has always fascinated me. When I moved to LA, I worked at lululemon for a few years and they introduced me to goal setting as a concept and it really blew me away. I remember we were all told to find our B-HAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). That was so scary to talk about! Would people think I'm crazy if I said I wanted to travel the world for a living or be known as the best adventurous wedding planner of all time?

We would even get together outside of work and have mini goal coaching sessions, talk about what we're doing everyday to get closer to our goals and celebrate every time someone accomplished one.

Now, we all have our own techniques when it comes to setting goals and actually reaching them but here are 3 tips that have really helped me check them off my list!

  1. Write them down.

Whether it's in a notebook or on your Facebook page, there is scientific proof that you're more likely to accomplish them if you start by writing them down! If anything, you are declaring to yourself, on paper, that these are some goals and dreams you would like to accomplish in the near future. Next to each goal, make sure to write your "by when" date. For example: I will travel to Bali by October 2019. (Note: I didn't say I want. I said I WILL!)

  2. Get yourself a buddy.

If I have no one checking in on me, you can be CERTAIN that I will not be going to the gym every morning but if I know someone is waiting for me at 7am, I will not let them down! Not only that, but talking through your goals with someone else can be really inspiring. They may have great ideas that you never thought about but overall, they are your very own cheerleader.
  3. Be kind to yourself.

There's no point in beating yourself up if you didn't accomplish something exactly when you wanted to. Reflect on what you could have done better and move on! It's also OK to modify your goals. Life happens and things change. I think one of my 5- year goals was to live in a big house...umm I live on a boat with my husband and 2 dogs and I am LOVING it!

Hope this was helpful! What is ONE goal you are definitely crushing this year?
