Joshua Tree National Park Boho Elopement

Today, you're in for a treat with this boho Joshua Tree desert elopement! Joshua Tree is one of my all-time favorite U.S Parks but maybe it's because my husband and I got married in the area. However, I also think the Dr.Seuss-like Yucca trees are just so unique. Lucky for us, our adventurous couples love this National Park just as much as we do and we get to go back often for elopements and ceremonies!

Getting Ready

Amber and Brad rented this cute AirBnB in Joshua Tree just about a 20 minute drive to the Park. They got ready for their desert elopement in separate rooms while their families set up the reception table and a little cocktail area for later. Amber had her hair and makeup done by Jay-Lee of Superstition Makeup whom she met on Reddit which I thought was pretty cool!

The Ceremony

Part of our job as Wedding Planners is to scout a great location for the ceremony. When the ceremony is in a National Park, we need to go there a little earlier and set up. With the help of the officiant, Matt, we found the perfect little intimate spot shielded from the desert wind. We know a thing or to about prepping for an elopement. Check out our favorite elopement must-have products on Amazon!

The details

Even though this wedding only had 10 people, the details were really cute and represented the couple well. For example, their vow book was a vintage Marvel comic book, something both the bride and groom really enjoy. After the ceremony, we popped champagne and guests got to celebrate with the newlyweds before they zoomed away for photos.

The Reception

While the bride and groom ran away into the sunset for gorgeous desert photos, the guests headed back to the AirBnB for cocktails & appetizers. When the bride and groom joined them, everyone sat down for an intimate dinner prepared by a local Chef. This is the point where we sneak away and let the newlyweds and their families enjoy this time together. We're happy to report that Amber and Brad are living happily every after!

Modern & Minimalist Wedding at Rimrock Ranch

A bride and groom in Joshua Tree, California for their wedding day at Rimrock Ranch.

I get all the vibes when I know I have a wedding at Rimrock Ranch coming up! It's such a simple yet beautiful location especially for a wedding. As some of you may know, I (Jess) grew up in a suburb of Los Angeles and had never been to Joshua Tree until I started doing weddings with 'Cause We Can Events. Shocking, I know! It really blows my mind that Joshua Tree was sitting in my backyard this entire time. Now we get to visit quite frequently, thanks to all the rad couples that want to wed or elope in the desert.

Wedding Management Package

I mentioned in my last blog post (Big Sur Wedding) that it takes a certain kind of person to say they are going to plan their own wedding. We offer three main packages: full planning, partial planning & wedding management (also known as Month-of Coordination). We know what it takes for a client to be the ideal "wedding management" contender. The Wedding Management package is for the bride and/or groom who wants to tackle their own planning and design. However, they know they need to hire a professional to bring it all together 6 weeks before the wedding. Etosha, the bride of this blog post, needed just that!

A bride and groom hike through Joshua Tree for their wedding photos.

Bringing the Vision Together

Okay, now back to the real story... the wedding details! We met Etosha & Justin for the first time during their walk-through at Rimrock Ranch. While we were discussing the lay of the land, we decided to shake things up a bit! Since we've been working at Rimrock Ranch, we tend to stick to the same layout but this time we decided as a team we'd try something new.  (UPDATE! Due to noise ordinance of the area there are now approved layouts for the space that are equally as awesome). We made the dance floor the center of attention with the tables on the perimeter and utilized the bistro lighting that Rimrock Ranch already has in place. This allowed the focus of the reception to remain in one place so there was no need to get creative and shift people from dinner to dance party in a hurry.

Best Vendors to hit Joshua Tree

Yes, that's a bold statement but I will say Etosha had some amazing vendors lined up for her wedding at Rimrock Ranch. It was an eclectic mix of vendors she has met throughout her life and played a special part somewhere at one time. If I had to give only one piece of wedding planning advice I may say, get to know your vendors and connect with them on a level outside of just "someone you're paying." It  will make the process so enjoyable for you and them! The vendors you choose will add to the experience before, during and after your wedding day.

Tea Ceremony + Cocktail Hour

After the ceremony, guests were invited to cocktail hour that included drinks from an old fashioned trailer and amazing appetizers from Room Forty. Meanwhile, FDK Florals and our team battled the desert winds to get the tables looking just right. During cocktail hour, Etosha & Justin took part in a traditional tea ceremony in the heart of the venue aka under the observation deck at Rimrock Ranch. Their guests could gather around the observation deck to watch the ceremony take place. It was so special to witness!

Dinner + Party Time

I would like to start this section off by saying, a desert wedding would not be complete without a generator debacle of some kind... I will spare you the details but do know that IT ALWAYS COMES UP so be prepared. Now back to the dinner talk, if you have never worked with Room Forty, you're in for a real treat when you do! You can't really beat the presentation their catering team delivers during a dinner service. The serving staff walked in plated meals from large planks! It was quite the experience and the guests loved it! From there we moved onto dancing and the rest of the night is history.

DJ Heart of Gold played tunes that everyone could enjoy while Old Fashioned Mobile Bar continued to serve cocktails.  As always, we are so lucky to work with couples like Etosha and Justin who bring their fun personality and traditions our way!

Needless to say, this wedding at Rimrock Ranch had to be one of the most creative ones we've ever had. When couples are open to having fun with food, drinks and decor it makes wedding planning so much more exciting for our team!

How to have an Eco Friendly & Low waste Wedding

It’s no surprise that weddings can produce a lot of waste & leave a large carbon footprint. Did you know that on average, a wedding produces more than 400lbs of waste? One of our goals is to always try to reduce the negative impact that weddings make on the planet. These are some of the ways you can be more helpful to make sure your wedding is not only gorgeous but better for the environment!

Ceremony at Cap Rock in Joshua Tree National Park. Winter ceremony in the desert with snow.

When choosing your venue, opt for a National Park! Often times the fees associated with obtaining a permit goes back into the park and helps with conservation, education, and improving the grounds.

If outdoors isn’t you thing- head over to ! This site will tell you all of the buildings in your area that make it a priority to be green! Some of our all time favorite weddings have taken place in Joshua Tree, San Bernardino National Forest, The 1909, and Calamigos Ranch.

Winter ceremony at Cap Rock in Joshua Tree national park - a venue focused on sustainability

Invites can be a huge waste producer of waste. More often than not, your invites & save the dates end up in the garbage.  A simple solution is to go electronic! Even if you’d like to still send paper invites, you can prompt your guests to RSVP on your wedding website instead. Paper Culture actually plants a tree for every order & uses 100% recycled paper.

Simple white and green flowers with black candlesticks for eco friendly wedding

Flowers are actually one of the biggest waste producers in the wedding industry. First- try and find a local flower farm that is implementing sustainable practices. You can also opt for potted succulents as centerpieces for your guests to take home or donate all of the flowers to a local nursing home so they can be enjoyed for longer! We have some amazing florists in the area that promote sustainability, like Rosewater Florals & Wisteria Lane.

If you’ve ever seen how much food gets thrown out after a wedding.. Let’s just say it’s A LOT. So find yourself a caterer that is eco friendly, like Eco Caters specializes in making sure your event is eco friendly by sourcing local & organic food from farms that are sustainable. You can also find caters that will donate your leftovers to homeless shelters.

Black candlesticks, black plates and green napkins on wood table. Greenery hanging from frames for trendy dinner party. Eco friendly wedding idea

There is no reason to buy all of your wedding decor (unless you plan on using it all in your house after!) There are so many wonderful rental companies that will be able to fit your style & budget! Everything from table numbers, chairs, bar glasses, to candle holders! Some of our favorite rental companies to work with are La Pinata Party & Signature Party Rentals.

There you have it! Some simple ways to reduce that footprint! If it seems overwhelming- hire a planner & make sure you communicate that you want to be as eco friendly as possible!

Joshua Tree Spring Wedding at Rimrock Ranch

Springtime in the high desert is a gamble. It could be really warm or it could get really cold. Lucky for Kristin and Cliff, they got the best Joshua Tree wedding day weather! This cute Burning Man-loving couple tied the knot with 90 of their closest friends and family at Rimrock Ranch and we're excited to show you every detail!

The Welcome Party

What's great about this venue is that there are accommodations on-site for up to 22 people.  From shared cabins to airstreams, there's a cozy spot for your whole bridal party and close family. The day before the wedding, everyone was invited to Rimrock Ranch for a laid back welcome dinner where guests can all meet and relax after their day of travel.

Entrance of Rimrock Ranch with Joshua Trees and eclectic signs are seen throughout the property.

Little Wedding Details

Wedding details start with the invitations. You set the theme of the wedding and communicate your excitement about the day with all your guests. I loved how simple these wedding invitations were but they had a really great font and the most perfect little cacti stamps to go on the envelopes. Let's also take a second to admire those gold wedding rings! I LOVE how Kristin decided to have a marquise shaped diamond set horizontally like that!

Simple boho inspired wedding invitations with cactus and cactus stamps.

The Bouquet

The bouquet gets its very own heading because it was a piece of art! The thing weighed a lot but truly was a masterpiece. I always love seeing a king protea flower in our desert wedding bouquets because its prickly petals remind me a lot of a cactus.

Getting Ready + First Look

Kristin got ready in the Hatch House which is the bridal suite at Rimrock Ranch. Cliff got ready in the Lodge with all of his guys.

Since this venue is so fun and eclectic, the First Look took place in front of one of their iconic airstream trailers. Rimrock Ranch has a mix of western vibes and artsy desert vibes. Perfect for a wedding in Joshua Tree!

Ceremony + Reception Design

While all the pretty photos were happening, my team and I were busy setting up for the ceremony and reception. In case you don't remember, my husband and I got married at this venue so I might be biased when I say this is the most gorgeous ceremony backdrop you'll ever see! See for yourself.

Ceremony set up at Rimrock Ranch in Joshua Tree, CA. Gorgeous ceremony with yucca trees and the desert in the back drop. Dark wooden chairs with floral arrangements in terracotta pot

Check out this fun idea the bride had for the ceremony! They asked all their guests to pick up a rose quartz in a bowl and during the ceremony they were asked to give it all good energy and place it back in the bowl. Now the couple has this big bowl of crystals in their home full of good vibes for their marriage!

Unique ceremony idea: Signage with bowl of rose quartz where guests can pick one up, give it good energy and place it back for the newlyweds to keep.

The reception was so much fun to set up! We had long wooden tables each set with a modern white plate and light pink knotted napkin for a more casual look. A mix of blush and clear wine glasses were set next to a clear water goblet to add a pop of color but not steal the show. I also love the idea of clear glass bottles of water for the table to share. It's easier on the serving staff and more interactive for guests.

Let's Dance!

As the sun set over the desert, it started to get a little chilly but it just meant we had to turn the heat up on the dance floor! The couple also bought a bunch of Mexican blankets for guests to use throughout the evening and keep as a little wedding favor. Also, can we talk about how cool their faux fur coats are!?

What it Takes to be a Boho Bride or Groom

I think at this point in the game, it's pretty obvious that our team produces a ton of boho desert weddings. We team up with Under Canvas a lot and we could not be more thankful for that partnership. When we are working in the desert, our team tends to talk a lot about how our clients are the ideal glamping couple. They tend to be very calm with whatever is thrown their way and always have a great time. If you're trying to decide if you'd enjoy your time out in the desert for your wedding weekend, here’s a quick list for what it may take to be the perfect glamping bride or groom:

Bride in Grace Loves Lace dress with cape and groom in light grey suit at Rimrock Ranch in Joshua Tree

You are going to have friends & family staying on the same property for the weekend, it’s impossible to please everyone but we've found ways to work around it. One being, the first night we suggest you keep it semi mellow so everyone is well rested for the big wedding day.  We aren't saying don't have fun but a welcome dinner with cocktails is the best bet! We recently did a wedding that had live acoustic music and that was a huge hit. On the actual wedding day you should consider setting a curfew for outdoor amplified music. Once it hits midnight, we suggest moving indoors (if possible) or turning the volume down a bit. We also found that a welcome kit equipped with earplugs can go a long way. It’s your day so you make the judgement call!

All wedding planners would love for their couples to go with the flow but it is a completely different ballgame when you are playing in the desert for the weekend. It’s important to remember that we are up against Mother Nature. The desert can bring wind, rain, heat & cold all within the same month! With the weather being wildly unpredictable, it is important you are able to trust Plan A and Plan B. You will want to keep a close eye on the weather 2 weeks prior to your big day. Pending what Siri is showing you on the forecast, you may have to move the ceremony indoors, order a last minute tent or, our personal favorite, push everything back a bit and see what happens. You never know, you could get lucky two of our desert couples end up with a double rainbow during your ceremony!

We suggest you ditch the heels and go with some comfortable boots for your glamping wedding! You will feel more confident and definitely more comfortable. As we mentioned, the weather can be unpredictable so make sure you check the weather and pack a cute jacket to go along with your wedding attire just in case you need it.

As always, we highly suggest you don’t tackle your glamping wedding alone. It is important you find the right event planning team to help your desert dreams come true! Read more about that topic HERE

Sneak Peeks: Our Rimrock Ranch Wedding Weekend!

A longer post will follow with all the juicy details of our Rimrock Ranch wedding weekend in the desert but for now I want to share some sneak peeks that I got this week from my amazing photographer and good friend, Chloe Moore.

rimrock ranch desert wedding couple in front of vintage bus

The Venue

I swear, Rimrock Ranch is one of those venues that doesn't require a lot of decor. It's just full of cool vintage cars and buses and eclectic decor all over the place. But the most beautiful part of this venue is that no matter what time of year you get married here, the sunsets will make all of your guests stop what they're doing and stare. That alone was worth every penny. Not to mention that the owners, Gwen and Eric are some of the nicest and coolest human beings ever!

The Experience

Are there some things that I could have done differently? Sure. But the whole weekend experience of being surrounded by this group of people that will NEVER again all be together at once was surreal and I wouldn't trade it for anything. There were SO.MANY.TEARS!

ceremony at rimrock ranch in front of joshua tree

The Dancing

Half of my family is from Quebec, therefore speaks French so our DJ, Jack Farmer, played some awesome French songs and even our American family who didn't know the words started dancing. It was seriously so much fun! Oh and our dogs were wish us all weekend and were completely zonked on the ride home!

2. RimRock Ranch, Joshua Tree, CA

RimRock Ranch is where I got married in September 2017! The reason I chose this venue is because we can have it for 3 days, it's next to Joshua Tree National Park, our pups can attend and it has a few airports nearby. The sunrises and sunsets are incredible and I barely need any decor items because of the natural beauty and cool eclectic decor in this space.

This location is way out there and not for the faint of heart. It will require a lot of imagination, money and patience but it will be SO worth it.
