Yes, you can definitely get married in Mexico as a U.S. citizen. Many couples choose Mexico for its stunning destinations and chill vibes. However, you’ll need to follow specific steps to ensure that your marriage is legally recognized both in Mexico and back in the United States. Here are a couple ways you can go about it:

Get legally married in the US first. This is the easiest way to go about it. Head over to your local county clerk’s office to obtain a marriage license, get an officiant and a witness (if applicable) and you’re all set!
Get legally married in Mexico. A few more steps are involved but it’s possible. Here are the main steps:
- Provide legal documents such as passport, birth certificates, tourist card, Proof of Legal Capacity to Marry and Divorce Decrees or Death Certificates:
- Get a marriage license at the local Civil Registry Office (Registro Civil) in the municipality where you plan to marry
- Provide 2 witnesses (and their legal documents)
- After the ceremony, you’ll receive a Mexican marriage certificate (acta de matrimonio) which you may need to get apostilled in order for it to be recognized in the US.

Pro Tip: Most wedding ceremonies in Mexico will be performed in Spanish so be sure to hire a translator or find someone who can speak english.
